Welcome to the Buddy Program!! We have two programs serving students from Blacksburg High School and the Virginia Tech community. Volunteers for the Buddy Program are paired up with mentally or physically challenged students, creating friendships for the semester, school year, and beyond. The “buddies” and volunteers participate in individual activities about once a week and the program holds group activities once or twice a month. These group activities have included holiday parties, pizza socials, craft nights, dances, and bowling nights, among other things.
Currently we have about twelve buddies with six at Blacksburg High School and six at Virginia Tech. Our volunteers for the high school buddies take them to dinner, out for ice cream, or to the movies. Our volunteers for the Virginia Tech participants attend class with their buddy, take them to lunch, help them with homework, and ensure that the students are able to make their way around campus. Each of our volunteers helps their buddy develop social and practical skills, academic strengths, and lasting friendships.
