Mission

History

Dating back to 1873 when the YMCA at Virginia Tech was established to "tame the rowdy young men on campus," the main purpose of the YMCA was to provide all non-academic services for students through a variety of spiritual, campus and community-based activities.  Since its beginning, as the Y has grown and been shaped by campus and community needs, many incredible programs and initiatives have been launched.

Throughout this growth, student involvement has always been one of the Y's cornerstones of success and in 1986 the YMCA created a division, Y Student Programs (YSP), exclusively to work with students.  YSP embraces the Y's long tradition of providing pportunities for students to serve and impact the campus and the community through leadership and volunteerism.
