Tutoring matches
Virginia Tech students with students from Blacksburg Middle (BMS) and
Blacksburg High School (BHS). Tutors help the middle and high school
students with troublesome or challenging academic subject areas. The
program is an excellent opportunity for students who plan to become
teachers or students who like to work with middle and high school age
young adults.
The process of becoming a middle or high school tutor is very simple.
Stop by 312 Squires or call 231-3734 to sign up. A Program Leader will
then meet with you during a training meeting to help you to prepare for
tutoring. Next, the guidance departments at the schools match you up
with a student that matches your areas of academic interest or fits your
schedule. However, YMCA tutors are given the choice in regard to the
length, day of the week, and times for/of tutoring. Tutoring occurs on
school grounds during school hours. Usually a volunteer tutors about
once a week.
The YMCA tutoring programs at Blacksburg Middle School and Blacksburg
High School gives Virginia Tech students an opportunity to get
experience and to do something very positive for the community.
