United in Service Learning for Life

Tutoring - Elementary School

The elementary school tutoring program, started in 1988, provides service to the Blacksburg area elementary schools. The purpose of the program is to provide an additional aid to teachers in the classrooms and to provide children in the area with additional attention for learning and personal development. Volunteers spend 1-2 hours per week helping out in Harding Avenue Elementary, Kipps Elementary, Gilbert Linkous Elementary, and Prices Fork Elementary Schools.

Many volunteers work as a teacher's aide, or they are used as a personal tutors for students who need extra attention in a particular area.

Volunteers become involved with this program because they enjoy working with children, and many are in training to be educators. Volunteers are provided with an opportunity for service as well as an educational experience - a chance to learn about the area and children in general. All the participants get a sense of accomplishment out of this program, and it is a great help to the community.
