United in Service Learning for Life

Senior Connections

Welcome to the YMCA Student Program Senior Connections.

What are the site's mission?

We provide elderly adults time to reflect on their lives, allow young adults to overcome society stigmas about aging and brighten the days of all participants.

Who does your site serve?

Warm Hearth's Showalter Center hosts our biweekly visits. Warm Hearth is a non-profit retirement community with three live style offerings. Showalter Center is the assisted living sector of Warm Hearth.

How does your service relate to your site's missions?

Our visits brighten the days for the residents and leave them in brighter sprits. This visits allow volunteers an opportunity to understand the aging process. Each week the residents are able to participate in stimulating conversations that help retain cognitive abilities while providing many with their only source of social interaction.

What are the weekly activities?

This program provides stimulating group interaction between residents and volunteers. Tea and cookies are served during discussions with topics ranging from volunteer's grades to the upcoming Hokie football game to political views to past endeavors. Residents are always excited to see young people and we are welcomed with open arms.
