The YMCA has provided alternative break sessions since the 1980s. This year’s
winter break session will be held at the YMCA Camp Winona in De Leon, Fla.,
where students will have the opportunity to volunteer cleaning up hurricane
damage.
Tech Students will assist by cutting down trees, painting cabins, burning fallen
debris and by doing small carpentry jobs.
Jim Young, a junior at Virginia Tech helps coordinate the alternative break
trips.
“(The alternative break) provides students with an opportunity to make a
difference and use their time wisely by assisting those in need of help,” Young
said.
Young said he hopes students will use this experience to make a difference in
the lives of others, to feel good about what they did over break and to
hopefully put smiles on the faces of hundreds of children who attend this camp
during the summer.
This coming alternative winter break trip will be human, nutrition, food and
exercise major Jody Gill’s second trip. Gill said this winter’s mission is of
personal importance to her.
“I know people in Florida who were impacted significantly by the hurricanes, it
inspires me to want to help in anyway possible,” Gill said.
“This is a good way to meet and fellowship with other Virginia Tech students
with similar interests.”
Anyone who is interested in attending this alternative break trip is encouraged
to attend one of the three informational meetings this week. On Tuesday Nov. 16
and Wednesday Nov. 17 the informational meeting will be held in the lobby of
Peddrew-Yates at 8:30 p.m. and Friday’s meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. in
room 312 Squires. For more information, access the YMCA
